23rd December 2016

Several festivals and the end of a particularly brutal year are now upon us. Instead of a religious blessing, I’d like to offer those who’ve contributed to the community of this page some end-of-year insight from my hero, the immortal Abbie Hoffman.

“Revolution is not something fixed in ideology, nor is it something fashioned to a particular decade. It is a perpetual process embedded in the human spirit. When all today’s isms have become yesterday’s ancient philosophy, there will still be reactionaries and there will still be revolutionaries. No amount of rationalization can avoid the moment of choice each of us brings to our situation here on the planet. I still believe in the fundamental injustice of the profit system and do not accept the proposition there will be rich and poor for all eternity.”

Go well this holiday season, friends. Xx

It seems that I have made many Greens unhappy by posting this article from the Financial Review last week. It reports quotes from former IPA employee and Merrill-Lynch merchant banker, Greens Senator Peter Whish-Wilson, attacking the trade union movement for daring to criticise the Greens deal with the Liberals and Nationals to kick 330,000 elderly Australians off the old age pension.

I regret that I must inform these Greens that the emotional depth of their political sook is somewhat insubstantial compared to the financial terror their grubby deal with the conservatives will inflict on 330,000 low-to-middle income Australian families this holiday season – who have lost their financial security at the most vulnerable time of their lives.

Pensions are not a “safety net”, and the same logic that insists they are not an entitlement is that same that privatises education, erodes Medicare, punishes dole recipients and exposes the poor to an entirely commercial housing market, with disastrous results.

Wheeling out a man who owns a winery to bash unions, Greens? For shame.
